The Results Are Back, I Am Positive

Yesterday I found out that I am positive for the BRCA mutation. In short, this means my genes are mutated, or altered, in such a way that its protein product is not made or does not function correctly, DNA damage most likely will not be repaired properly. As a result, my cells are more likely to develop additional genetic alterations that will make me more susceptible to cancer.
After discussions with my doctor it looks like I can opt to have a mastectomy as early as this year. This would basically be what Angelina Jolie did when she heard she was BRCA positive. What this will do is decrease my likelihood of developing breast cancer by a considerable amount. I will also need to have both ovaries removed but my doctor would like to wait a few more years for that. I am going to be 30 in July so I have found out in perfect time to take action.
I am creating this blog to share my experience with preventative procedures and what it is like to deal with having the BRCA mutation. I hope to connect with others who are in similar situations so that we can provide support and encouragement to one another.
